Recommendations from an Expert Workshop, February 2004
The following recommendations provide guidance to medical practitioners
in the appropriate use of estrogen and progestogen therapy in peri-
and postmenopausal women. They are derived from a meeting in February
2004 of internationally recognized experts who reviewed results of
the recent clinical trials, the conclusions of which have led to much
confusion and alarm among women and their doctors.

In the USA, a randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind trial
to evaluate the effects of a combination estrogen-progestogen therapy
in postmenopausal women was stopped after 5.2 years by the Women's
Health Initiative (WHI) because the health risks were considered higher
